How to make the most of your fitted bedroom furniture

We’re often asked what makes a beautiful bedroom – and the secret is storage. If you invest in fitted bedroom furniture, custom made so everything has its place, then the result will be a calm and relaxing space. The key to successful bespoke bedroom furniture, however, is careful planning.

Begin with the bed

Start by considering the bedroom layout as a whole. The bed is the biggest item, so where will that go? What kind of nightstands do you prefer and how will the rest of the storage work around the bed? Don’t forget that under-bed storage is an ideal solution for any size of bedroom. It is unobtrusive and offers a large area that would otherwise go unused.

Think about the look and feel

The size and shape of your bedroom will also influence the colour, finish, and material of the furniture. If it’s on display, the drawers and wardrobe should be in shades that are complementary to your chosen décor. Though furniture hidden behind closed doors should still be part of the overall scheme to bring the two spaces together. For walk-in wardrobes or dressing rooms, consider sliding doors for smaller spaces, as they encroach less onto the room. Otherwise, push-to-open doors help create smooth lines as there's no need for protruding handles.

Wardrobe essentials

When it comes to wardrobes, the advantage of bespoke furniture is we can create solutions that are tailored to you. It’s also an opportunity to keep all your clothes and shoe storage contained in one area, rather than individual pieces of freestanding furniture that can make a bedroom feel cluttered. Examine your current wardrobe and consider whether the ratio of hanging space to drawers to shelves is sufficient, and where it could be improved.

Hanging space and drawers

Our designs always include tall hanging rails for long dresses, and also short-depth pull-down rails, which are ideal for making use of the extra space under a high ceiling. Drawers of different widths and depths offer flexibility for a variety of items, though, in deeper wardrobes (600mm), we advise keeping drawers at a lower level so it’s easier to access the contents. Consider compartmentalised drawers with glass fronts to keep jewelry and belts in order, but also create a display – this is a lovely finishing touch.

Attention to detail

For our skilled team, every project is different. Recently, we designed a complex layout for a master suite with two (his and her) dressing rooms. It highlighted a number of important points: they had different layouts according to the lady and gentleman’s requirements. For example, the hanging spaces were individual, as were the spaces for shoes – including the size of the racks. Each area of the wardrobes were individually lit and we also allowed for access to electrical, heating, or cooling equipment behind the units.

When thinking about integrating lighting, AC, TV, and any other equipment including the wiring infrastructure for home automation, it is vital that they’re factored in from the start. They’ll need to be allowed for in the build and installation of your fitted bedroom furniture, so the workings can all be seamlessly concealed. The same is true if you would like to integrate a safe into the design. There are often unutilised areas, for example, the eaves in loft bedrooms, that make perfect hiding places.
